Geometric Complexity Theory: an introduction for geometers
نویسنده
چکیده
This article is survey of recent developments in, and a tutorial on, the approach to P v. NP and related questions called Geometric Complexity Theory (GCT). It is written to be accessible to graduate students. Numerous open questions in algebraic geometry and representation theory relevant for GCT are presented.

Classical Model Theory of Fields
We begin with some thoughts on how model theory relates to other parts of mathematics, and on the indirect role of Gödel’s incompleteness theorem in this connection. With this in mind we consider in Section 2 the fields of real and p-adic numbers and show how these algebraic objects are understood model-theoretically: theorems of Tarski, Kochen, and Macintyre. This leads naturally to a discussi...
متن کاملAn introduction to geometric complexity theory
I survey methods from differential geometry, algebraic geometry and representation theory relevant for the permanent v. determinant problem from computer science, an algebraic analog of the P v. NP problem.
متن کاملPhylogenetic Algebraic Geometry
Phylogenetic algebraic geometry is concerned with certain complex projective algebraic varieties derived from finite trees. Real positive points on these varieties represent probabilistic models of evolution. For small trees, we recover classical geometric objects, such as toric and determinantal varieties and their secant varieties, but larger trees lead to new and largely unexplored territory...
متن کاملOrbifolds as Stacks?
The goal of this survey paper is to argue that if orbifolds are groupoids, then the collection of orbifolds and their maps need to be thought of as a 2-category. This 2-category may be either taken to be the weak 2-category of groupoids, bibundles and equivariant maps between bibundles or the strict 2category of geometric stacks represented by proper etale Lie groupoids. While nothing in this p...
متن کاملGeometric Complexity Theory: Introduction
Foreword These are lectures notes for the introductory graduate courses on geometric complexity theory (GCT) in the computer science department, the university of Chicago. Part I consists of the lecture notes for the course given by the first author in the spring quarter, 2007. It gives introduction to the basic structure of GCT. Part II consists of the lecture notes for the course given by the...
